Stockpile Storage
Stockpile Storage can sometimes be as difficult as building the stockpile itself.
Can I freeze it?
For Stockpile Storage just about anything can be frozen. The only exceptions are anything in a can or eggs that are still in the shells. However, this doesn’t mean that everything should be frozen. I have found a few items that I won’t be freezing again. I will add to the list as I find items that should not be frozen. For more information on Freezing food CLICK HERE
Cream Cheese- Frozen cream cheese still works great for dips or other cooked recipes. Freezing the cream cheese changes the texture a bit and does not work well for desserts or other items when the smooth texture is needed.
Sour Cream- I had read somewhere online that you can freeze Sour Cream and then put it in the blender to regain the creamy texture. This was not the case for me. Not amount of blending was making the Sour cream creamy again.
Can I use food past their “expiration” dates?
Generally, yes you can use food well past their expiration dates. Often the dates on the food is not an expiration date but a “best if used by” date. All this mean is that the quality of the item may not be as good as it was before that date. Foods that have not been exposed to temperature changes or open and exposed to the air can often last well beyond the date on the package.
Do I need a space dedicated to my stockpile?
Although this would make it easier, you do not need a space dedicated for your stockpile. I keep everything that is non-food, with the exception of laundry or dish soap, in a storage cabinet upstairs. All the food is either in my kitchen or den, which is right off the kitchen. If you do not have an area to dedicate to holding your stockpile, keep an inventory. Make a list of how much you have and where it is located. That way you will never open a cabinet and be surprised at whats inside.
